A Significant Week for Gender Equity

I will help forge a gender equal world

This week holds significant developments: Australia’s private sector gender pay gap has been revealed at 19%, equating to $18,461 less for women compared to men. Moreover, a recent McKinsey & Co. report on Women in the Workplace, based on surveys from over 450,000 individuals in 2023, reports continued global underrepresentation of women in senior management, especially among women of colour, notably black and Latina women. These groups face challenges, including limited visibility in leadership roles and obstacles to career advancement.

Reflecting on my personal journey as a daughter of migrant parents and a member of the CALD community, I recall lacking relatable role models in leadership during my upbringing. It wasn’t until encountering an Italian woman, Yvette, in a position of authority during a pivotal meeting in my 20s that I realised the impact of representation. In my book, I write about my experience, when I was sent to Canberra to be part of a higher education think tank in my twenties.

Joining this group, surrounded by seasoned professionals, I felt out of my depth. Stepping into Parliament House’s meeting room, I met Yvette, the Director. She was a petite Italian woman, exuding grace and authority in equal measure. It was a revelation for me. While I had seen impeccably dressed and graceful Italian women before, they often lacked authority, especially in positions of power outside the home. Meeting Yvette changed my perspective. Seeing someone like me in a position of authority ignited a belief within me that I, too, could belong in leadership.

This encounter sparked my commitment to empowering underrepresented groups to embrace leadership roles. It propelled me into extensive research and practice, culminating in a Ph.D. in Gender Psychology and the authorship of a bestselling book, “Rising to Feminine Power: The Lasso of Truth,” a nod to DC fans.

Let’s continue championing diversity and inclusion in leadership, fostering a workplace where all voices are heard and valued.

I am speaking at a number of forums this month on gender equity. If you would like me to speak to your team, please contact me.
